Geoff Wilkinson's Rally for Progress Speech

Lawns of Parliament House Hobart Tasmania 9-December-2012

The speech I made at Sunday's Rally for Progress for everyone’s information. I feel it appropriate that you read this story as it is only one of the many tragic stories very few are aware of that is permeating our society.

I am not and will never have the skills of public speaking, however I was able with difficulty due to the nature of the content, read from my prepared notes on Sunday the following.

While calling friends and past colleagues during the week, to advise them of today’s event, I was made aware of one of the most tragic stories, that has in part resulted from the destruction of Tasmania’s timber industry.

One of these calls was to Jamie Alomes who I haven’t spoken to for some time.

Jamie was a logging contractor and then cartage contractor for Gunns (which are now closed). When everything went pear shaped in his home state of Tasmania, Jamie found work in Queensland after Cyclone Yasi, carting logs from salvage operations. Once those operations came to an end, he relocated to Seymour in Victoria.

Jamie told me while he is away his wife Marg was still living at Buckland(East Coast) in Tasmania and he has only been able to get home three times during the past eighteen months due to work commitments and of course cash flow.

When the rot started to set in the Tasmanian timber industry one of the Jamie Alomes sons Scott, and his wife Natasha relocated just under two years ago to the Northern Territory, and now live some hour and a half South of Darwin at Dundee. Scott could only find work as a machinery operator in mining and is now doing fly in, fly out work from Darwin to Queensland, a similar story of many ex Tasmanians who have had to move interstate to find work.

When Jamie answered his phone on Friday evening, I was surprised to hear he was in Darwin. Immediately I knew from the tone in his voice that something was terribly wrong. After exchanging pleasantries Jamie confided that Scott and Natasha’s two year old son, had been found in the pool on the Wednesday and tragically has passed away in hospital on Friday.

I am not saying the cause of this tragedy is a direct result of the eco nazi (greens) campaign, however the indirect results of tearing families apart, forcing them to move away, compounds the suffering of this family and many others.

The tragedy of Scott and Natasha is just one of many and as difficult as it is for people to talk about them, I believe these stories must be told. Elements of the media deny honest, decent hard working people a fair go. They lean on the side of the sensational, misinformed stories and paint the criminals (greens) who have been systematically destroying our lives while the green many groups are made out to be hero’s.

Some ex-Tasmanian timber workers are doing fly in fly out from Tassy as their families will not move with some of the children not wanting to change schools, these families are settled and feel secure in Tasmania, others like Scott have had to relocate. It is estimated that there are currently some fifty families from the Buckland, Orford, Triabunna area who have had to move interstate and leave their wives and families behind, this is so that they can pay their bills and put food on the table.

Government Funded Payouts

We have all heard in the media and from the State and Federal governments about exit packages for timber contractors. These payouts, so they are told is that they can leave the industry with dignity. What a load of frogs wollop! Yes some contractors have received some money; however that money in most cases has not even covered their debt, let alone provide any opportunity to find alternative employment.

Then there are also many contractors who weren’t eligible for any government assistance, because they were unlucky enough to be working on private property and not State Forest. When they bring this up in the media, we hear nasty anonyms comments from the ill informed about how ungrateful these contractors are. Comments like that make me sick to the pit of my stomach,. Those contractors never wanted to be forced into the position of having to accept this money in the first place. All they wanted was the right to go about their lawful work in peace, to continue to provide jobs for fellow Tasmanians and contribute to Tasmania’s economy.

The pain, suffering and dislocation of families due to the ongoing demonization of an industry that I and my very many colleagues are justifiably proud of, is a disgrace. I am ashamed of this present corrupt Green/Labor government and they should be ashamed of the pain and suffering they have caused to so many.

We have become a gutless State and a gutless country, when we give in to blackmail and extortion. We have legislation that protects the eco nazis from defamation laws yet these people can close so many family business for Gods sake!

What other country in the world allows these criminals to go overseas and engage in industrial sabotage? While ever we continue to reward these criminals they will come back for more. What we need is legislation to deal with these eco terrorists and mandatory sentencing so that magistrates and judges with a sympathetic bent, can’t just give them a limp slap on the wrist. Until that happens there will never be peace in the forests, mines, fisheries or anywhere else.

Why should we have any faith in what these eco nazis are saying? Why should we believe in this corrupt government, when they presented the bill to the lower house without the signatures of all parties and with omissions from the original?

You have all turned up here today, to send this corrupt government a message that we have had enough of the locking up of Tasmania. There is currently some 48% of Tasmania’s land mass in some form of reserve.Enough is Enough! We want an election and we want it now!

Someone here today suggested that we should pass the hat around here today and ask you all to donate what ever you can to assist the Alomes with Funeral and air fare expenses. This is an opportunity to show our support for one of the families doing it extremely tough out there at the moment. I believe that Scott’s brother John and his sister Anne-Marie are with us here today. Please show your generosity and let them know we are thinking of them all, at this saddest of times.
